Statement by Hercli Bundi on the detention of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei (in German)

Stellungnahme von Hercli Bundi zur Verhaftung des chinesischen Künstlers Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiweis Verhaftung ist für viele Beobachter und Intellektuelle in China ein Schock. Bis zur Weltausstellung in Shanghai hat die latente Hoffnung bestanden, dass der wirtschaftliche Aufschwung in China soziale Verbesserung und individuelle Freiheit nach sich ziehen werde. Kunst und Kultur sollten die Ökonomie befruchten und die Widersprüche in der chinesischen Politik und Gesellschaft miteinander versöhnen. Davon ist nichts zu sehen. Während meiner Arbeit am Film "The House in the Park" über ein von Ai Weiwei initiiertes Städtebauprojekt wurde ich selbst vor die Frage gestellt, wie weit Kunst und Kultur instrumentalisiert werden, um einem schwindelerregenden Wachstum eine menschliche Dimension zu verleihen.
 
Zwischen 2005 und 2010 reiste ich fünf Mal nach China, um den Film "The House in the Park" zu drehen und in Beijing zu präsentieren. Der Film dokumentiert die Entstehung des Jinhua Architecture Park. Unter Ai Weiweis Führung wurden 17 Architekten aus aller Welt nach Jinhua eingeladen, um jeweils einen Pavillon im Park eines neuen Stadtteils zu bauen. Ich erlebte die Schwierigkeiten und Hoffnungen, mit denen viele Chinesen im Alltag leben, aber auch die Euphorie, mit der sie sich für ein besseres China einsetzen.
 
Als ich mit meinem Film begann, konnte Ai Weiwei als Künstler und Architekt frei arbeiten. Er war an Projekten beteiligt, die entweder vom chinesischen Staat finanziert oder von Milliardären mit Erträgen aus Chinas rasantem Boom initiiert wurden, so beim Nationalstadion in Beijing oder bei der gigantischen Villensiedlung "Ordos 100" in der inneren Mongolei. Bei all diesen Projekten sind auch Schweizer Architekten beteiligt. Fördern solche Projekte Chinas Aufbruch in eine bessere Zukunft oder werden sie benutzt, um eine verantwortungslose Politik zu kaschieren?
 
Bei den Dreharbeiten zu meinem Film begründete Ai Weiwei seine Hoffnung für eine konstruktive Zusammenarbeit wie folgt: "What is gonna be in the future and in the development, I can't tell myself. But the society is moving forward and becomes a better society, much more democratic, much more freedom now. And I think also, even with endless tremendous problems today, we make progress. New changes of the law. We made a lot of changes of the constitution. The development is obvious but of course there is also crisis."
 
Ai Weiweis Vater – der Schriftsteller Ai Qing – hatte in den 50er Jahren den Aufbau des kommunistischen Chinas mit seinen Texten unterstützt, um anschliessend für sein freiheitliches Denken mit Verbannung bestraft zu werden. 1978 wurde Ai Qing rehabilitiert. Im April 2002 erhielt Ai Weiwei von seiner Heimatstadt Jinhua den Auftrag, für seinen Vater ein Denkmal zu bauen. Drei Jahre später bat ihn die Stadt, den Jinhua Architecture Park zu planen. Ai Weiwei lud dazu Architekten aus dem Ausland ein. Die Bewohner von Jinhua sollten sehen, welche Vielfalt entsteht, wenn verschiedene Kulturen aufeinander treffen. Die Auftraggeber hofften, dass ein Stadtteil entsteht, wo sich "besser denken, leben und arbeiten lässt" (Zitat Yu Qiurong, Stadtbaumeister von Jinhua). Zu seinem Beitrag als Künstler sagte Ai Weiwei: "I think art is the solution not only in business but maybe in the military or political sense. To make everything more relate to who we are, why we are doing it and what would be a better solution for make it more human and more sensible. That is what art is making to do. Art can see the problem very differently. It's not only directed to profit making. Art can be very intelligent in a way, with different logic and very different feelings."
 
Bei der Parkeröffnung 2007 durchschnitt Ai Weiwei das rote Band, während er den Stinkfinger in die Schere hielt. Gefangen im System und enttäuscht vom Resultat in Jinhua, musste er mitansehen, wie der Park als Erfolg gehandelt wurde, obwohl die Pavillons ohne Strom, ohne Wasser, ohne Möbel, ohne Betreiber und ohne Publikum da stehen. Die kommunistischen Parteifunktionäre preisen das Resultat einer rein wirtschaftlich motivierten Kooperation, während die Realität offen legt, dass der kulturelle und soziale Fortschritt auf der Strecke geblieben ist.
 
Für viele Künstler in China ist Ai Weiwei ein Vorbild, eine Art Vaterfigur. Er inspiriert eine Szene, die sich kritisch mit dem Alltag auseinandersetzt. Mit steten Aktionen versuchen unzählige Kulturschaffende, Sauerstoff in ein erstickendes System zu leiten. Sie hoffen auf echte Veränderungen. Dieses Land will einen Ertrag für seinen Einsatz, und der kann nicht nur in wirtschaftlichem Aufschwung bestehen. Ai Weiweis Verhaftung bedeutet, dass ihn sein Name, sein Ruf und die Reputation seines Vaters nicht mehr schützen. Ihn verschwinden zu lassen und zu verletzen ist eine gezielte Machtdemonstration. Als ich fragte, was ein einzelner ausrichten kann in einer Welt, wo kein Stein auf dem anderen bleibt, antwortete er: "Everybody in the society only can contribute by fighting for it's own rights, you know so called human rights or so called freedom of the speech, to speek what's in your mind to listen to other peoples point of view. That would make the whole society healthier. Otherwise it's no matter how rich the society is. It's still a terrible society I think."
 
Ai Weiweis Stimme darf nicht schweigen. Wir alle sind aufgerufen den Dialog zu unterstützen, welcher Künstlern, Journalisten und Andersdenkenden in China verweigert wird. Jeder, der heute mit China zu tun hat, ist ein Akteur in diesem Ringen. Mit unserem Handeln können auch wir Ai Weiwei und seinem Land helfen.

'flying home' premieres in solothurn

The feature documentary "Flying Home" by Tobias Wyss is premiering at the Solothurn Film Festival. The screening is taking place on Saturday 22 January at 12:00 at the Landhaus, as well as on Tuesday 25 January at 17:00 at the cinema Canca Blue. During the festival the galery Künstlerhaus S11 is exhibiting photographs by the protagonist Walter Otto Wyss. The opening vernissage is taking place on Friday 21 January at 19:30.

Swetlana Geier passed away, peacefully, in the night from November 7th to 8th, at home, as she had wanted. She was 87 years old, her daughter was with her.

In der Nacht vom 7. auf den 8. November ist Swetlana Geier in ihrem Haus in Günterstal gestorben. Es war ein friedlicher Übergang und ihre Tochter war bei ihr.

Die Nachricht erreichte mich nicht ganz überraschend, in den letzten Wochen war sie immer schwächer und durchsichtiger geworden und ihr Körper schien ihr ein Hindernis zu werden, eine Last, den sie nun hinter sich gelassen hat.

Swetlana Geier hatte vielen Menschen viel zu geben. Ich wurde reich beschenkt von ihr und hatte die Möglichkeit, diesen Film mit ihr zu machen. Dafür bin ich zutiefst dankbar. Das ist ein Grund zur Freude.
Ich möchte nicht versuchen in Worte zu fassen, was die Begegnung mit  Frau Geier für mich war und ist, das ist zu gross. Schon beim Schreiben dieser Sätze wird mir deutlich, wie ich über die Worte stolpere wenn es gilt, aus Gegenwart Vergangenheit zu machen: „Frau Geier hatte viel zu geben..., Frau Geier war...“. Ich merke, dass das so für mich nicht stimmt. Frau Geier IST. Im Film sagt sie in einem ganz anderen Kontext: „... es ist nie eine Vergangenheit geworden“. Und ich spüre, wie dieser Satz auch auf ihr Wirken und geistiges Sein anwendbar wird.

Svetlana Geier est partie, paisiblement, la nuit dernière, chez elle comme elle le souhaitait. Elle avait 87 ans, sa fille était auprès d'elle.

Ceux qui auront vu le film depuis sa sortie le 13 octobre dernier ressentiront la même émotion, c'est une femme debout qui nous quittés. Une femme dont le destin a été marqué au fer rouge de l'Histoire, celle du stalinisme d'abord, du nazisme ensuite, avant de transcender ce poids grâce à la littérature et notamment la traduction littéraire du russe vers l'allemand. Après avoir fréquenté et traduit les oeuvres de Tolstoï, Boulgakov et Soljenitsyne, son auditoire s'est considérablement élargi en Allemagne après sa traduction des grands romans de Dostoïevski qu'elle appelait affectueusement "ses éléphants".

Elle disait avoir une dette envers l'Allemagne, "celle de Goethe et de Schiller". En tant que distributeur de ce film, nous avons désormais une dette envers elle, celle de prolonger sa parole, sa profonde humanité, sa rigueur intellectuelle et sa passion pour la littérature.

A elle qui disait "je crois que toute expérience spirituelle fait que les gens se traitent mieux et ne s'entretuent pas" nous ne pouvons que redoubler d'ardeur pour être les passeurs d'une parole qui résonne d'un profond humanisme dans un film magnifique.
Ce film est à la fois une expérience spirituelle et une rencontre importante pour ses spectateurs.
Merci au réalisateur Vadim Jendreyko qui a été le moteur de cette rencontre exceptionnelle.

Et repassons-nous en boucle aussi souvent que nous le pourrons ces "scènes sublimes pour re-goûter à la douce épaisseur de cette culture humaniste épargnée de nos gesticulantes tribulations" comme disait récemment un ami du film.

Et laissons-nous transporter par chacune de ses paroles comme elle était transportée par les "zones érotiques du langage".
A son regard, clair, lucide qui a tant scruté l'âme de la littérature russe et la sienne !
